The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union (EU) law that came into effect in 2018 and unifies regulations regarding the collection and processing of personal data. The GDPR emphasizes protecting the privacy rights of individuals and requires businesses to adhere to principles such as transparency, consent, data portability, data accuracy, and data security. Companies have a responsibility to process personal data lawfully and appropriately and to clearly explain to data subjects the purpose and method of use. GDPR applies to companies both inside and outside the EU, and provides uniform and strict protection of personal data.
