London Technology Week 2015 – Electricity’s Big Disconnect

adrian

Hi! This is Adrian at Web Analytics Consultants Association.

London Technology Week has been an eye opening experience so far. The 7-day tech event has further cemented London’s position as the capital of European tech.

With events covering everything including gaming, IT, wearables, education, music, sport, fashion, and science, big data was unsurprisingly the star so far.

Track your health, track your finances, track your refrigerator, and you can even track your sex life.

We track everything today to their finest detail and measure the data in order to improve our lives. Yet somehow we’ve forgotten to track that box hidden somewhere in the house that measures the thing that powers everything.

Our electricity.

In a world where 40% of people are connected to the Internet, energy companies are more disconnected than ever. Being one of the biggest analogue industries, energy companies still charge customers based on estimates of energy usage.

Estimates we pay every month without even thinking about how that amount was derived. You wouldn’t buy your groceries based on estimates so why would you buy energy based on estimates?

Good news is, things are changing.

There are new initiatives from energy companies that put you back on track. Initiatives that let you know how much energy you are actually consuming so you can pay for the exact amount every month.

From being in control to choosing how much to pay and actually choosing your energy company, the consumer is now in more control than ever before. A new data stream from energy companies will now power other applications and innovations we don’t know anything about, things that haven’t been created yet.

Close is the time when our home electricity will also be in our phones and wearables and also integrated in other applications for finance management.
